Experience a family-based cultural exchange

Au pair in Germany

An au pair stay allows a young person to live temporarily with a host family, help care for children and perform light family-related tasks while learning about German language and culture. GEMO helps you prepare a clear, serious project based on official information.

Understand the au pair role

An au pair stay is primarily a cultural exchange. The au pair is welcomed as a temporary family member and generally receives accommodation, meals and pocket money under the applicable conditions. It is neither full-time domestic employment nor a permanent replacement for professional childcare.

  • Helping with childcare and children’s activities
  • Light tasks directly connected with the children and shared family life
  • Time for learning German
  • Respect for schedules, rest and privacy
  • Open communication with the host family
02

Review your profile

Requirements may depend on age, nationality, language skills, childcare experience and host-country rules. We review your situation and identify the points that must be checked with the competent official authorities.

  • Valid identity document or passport
  • German knowledge appropriate to the programme
  • Genuine motivation for childcare and cultural exchange
  • Availability for the planned period
  • Childcare references or experience where requested
03

Prepare your application and conversations

We help structure your profile, CV, host-family letter and supporting documents. We also prepare initial interviews so that childcare, schedules, duties, the private room, pocket money, language courses and leave are discussed clearly.

  • Authentic profile and introduction letter
  • Questions for the host family
  • Video-interview preparation
  • Practical review of proposed documents
  • Checklist before making a decision
04

Prepare to travel safely

Before travelling, candidates must verify official visa or residence requirements, insurance, the au pair agreement, the host address and important contacts. GEMO provides practical and document support but cannot guarantee a host family, visa or administrative decision.
